National Weather Service Summer Season Safety Campaign

June 1st is the start of meteorological summer.  Summer means more time outdoors, traveling, camping, barbecuing and late sunsets.  However, summer also means extreme heat, which means thunderstorms, which mean flooding and…tornadoes. Being almost smack in the middle of tornado alley, Nebraskans tend to be pretty accustomed to this weather phenomena and can even grow complacent about them. But did you know that winds inside a tornado can reach up to 300 mph? Or that damage paths of tornadoes can be in excess of one mile wide and 50 miles long?

Don’t chance it, watch this video produced by the National Weather Service that provides some helpful tips on how to prepare for these very serious natural disasters.
